During my time as a correctional officer I was trained how to operate the entire facilities with each duty it contained a lot of concentration and physical attentiveness
I learned to operate all the incoming and outgoing traffic, transferring inmates, processing inmates, counting, behavior, deescalating situations
Making sure the inmates cleaned, took their medication, ate
I learned how to code talk, and work in the Control room which controlled each door in and out of the jail
I was able to learn to walk inmates to court and back from court
I have computer skills and processing inmates and writing out court documents was easy for me
I was able to write statements and help inmates get their court documents ready
I was able to communicate with my coworkers through a walkie, I had to write each time inmates went bathroom and their every move
I listened to each call and took notes
I worked in female and male housing, I also printed and had to converse information with officers and state marshals
A lot of my hard work was taught and learned through how to work with my team and crew
I had switching shifts every month
Work multiple double shifts and overtime
I was reliable when it came to physical training, I was massed and tased
I had a tight schedule and never missed work
I was on time and made sure my hygiene and others were followed by protocol
Throughout this experience I left with knowledgeable teachings and dedication that I didn’t have going in to the job.

All Oglala Lakota College employees made purchases in the bookstore, a certain amount was taken out biweekly, which was set up through payroll
I had to communicate with the financial department to make sure employee amounts were correct and updated every time they used the system for payroll
I had to update employee folders and get signatures for each purchase
I had to make sure every employee was aware of the amount being taken out so there would be no confusion
Excel was a very helpful tool for me during this time
I was also assigned to go out to each college center on the reservation and distribute books to students while keeping track of their purchases using their Pell grant or their own money
Every receipt we had was I helped my coworkers sort books for each class and have them ready for pick up or we would take them to the college centers
Also ordering the correct book for each class and making orders for certain books that instructors requested
I learned the Point-of-Sale system and how to close out the till at the end of the shift
I was able to show up on time and help others as soon as I entered especially at the beginning of the semester
Working for the college was probably the best experience I’ve had anywhere; I learned a lot from my supervisors and coworkers
I was able be a work study student while I was in school, this opened the door for a job opportunity.
